The highlights

  • Grows best in full sun
  • Plant as part of a border or dahlia display
  • Showy flowers from July to September
  • Provides incredible cut flowers

Description

  • A fabulously elegant variety suitable for a range of planting schemes, including higgledy-piggledy cottage gardens, space-limited balcony and container gardens, and of course, dedicated dahlia beds
  • Decorative creamy blooms grow on proud stems and contrast beautifully with the dark, olive green foliage
  • If you're looking to improve your garden's summer impact, then look no further - 'Melody White' can be reliably called upon to bloom throughout the summer months and even into early autumn
  • Are there any better flowers for cutting than dahlias? We're not certain but we reckon it's a close-run thing, that's for sure! Brighten your kitchen or living room with a freshly cut bouquet of dahlia blooms and feel the smile spread across your face
  • If you notice your dahlia becoming top-heavy under the weight of its flowers, then staking it to a support can be helpful
  • Live in an area prone to harsh winters? Prune, lift and store your dahlia tubers somewhere dry and frost-free (like your shed), then replant them in spring

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Dahlias have been known to have issues with slugs, aphids, capsid bugs, earwigs and powdery mildew. To defend against bacterial infections, ensure good garden hygiene. Space the plants out appropriately to allow for good air circulation. For slugs and snails, it's important to keep the area surrounding the plant free of debris and as dry as possible, especially at night - slugs and snails love damp conditions! You can use barriers (such as egg shells around the plant) to prevent these gastropods reaching the leaves. For aphids, check the leaves regularly for possible infestations. Pick the bugs off and spray the infected area with soapy water. You can also plant a companion plant nearby - marigolds, for instance - which will attract predatory insects such as ladybirds that will eat the aphids.

Water regularly

Water regularly, especially in dry spells. Try to water your dahlias at least once every week. But if you notice that your plant looks dry or distressed during extended hot periods, then you may want to increase the amount you water it.

Full sun

Position this dahlia in a fully sunny spot (at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any well-drained soil

Dahlia varieties like 'Melody White' prefer well-drained soil; if it's enriched with organic matter then that's good, too!

Feed regularly

When planting, apply a general purpose feed. Then, from July through to September time, feed every two weeks with a high-potash liquid feed (like tomato feed).
