How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Our vegetable plug plants are bred for good pest and disease resistance, but may still be susceptible to common problems. Although garlic is usually trouble-free, it can be affected by leek rust, onion white rot, allium leaf-mining fly and leek moth. To prevent disease, space plants well and don't grow onions, leeks or garlic in the same space for more than three years.

Water regularly

Water garlic regularly in spring and early summer until you see the foliage turning yellow – this is a sign that the bulbs are nearly ready to harvest.

Full sun to partial shade

Garlic does best in full sun but can deal with a little light shade in the afternoons.

Any fertile, well-draining soil except acid

Garlic likes a well-drained, fertile soil. It doesn’t thrive in acid soil but you can reduce acidity by applying lime in autumn and winter.

Feed regularly

Start feeding when you see strong spring growth, using a high nitrogen feed such as dried chicken manure pellets, and stop when the foliage starts to turn yellow.
