How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Bean plants can be affected by black bean aphids, which can be deterred by spraying the plant with a mix of water, vegetable oil and soap. Young plants also need protection from slugs and snails. If you see the telltale slimy trails, surround your plant with a barrier of copper wire, fine gravel or crushed eggshells, which they cannot cross. Plants should always be spaced well apart to allow air to circulate - this prevents fungal diseases like downy mildew.

Water regularly

Pea and bean plants need to be regularly watered. Feel the soil and if it is dry to the touch a fingernail deep, then give the plant a watering. On hot, summer days, this means watering once a day.

Full sun

Pea and bean plants do best with 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day. Position in a sheltered space, protected against chilling winds for best growth.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.

Feed every two weeks

Once the flowers emerge, feed the plants every two weeks with a high-potash fertiliser such as liquid tomato feed
