The highlights

  • Juicy, melt-in-your-mouth pears
  • Receiver of the RHS AGM
  • Poach in cloves and wine, or bake with honey
  • Harvest from September to October

Description

  • One of the finest-flavoured pears around! Sweet, rich and intensely aromatic with soft, melting flesh, 'Doyenné Du Comice' is a pear we think everyone should be familiar with
  • A late-flowering variety that’s suitable for growing in frosty places, this heritage variety was once referred to by the London Horticultural Journal as the best pear in the world!
  • A thoroughly-deserving recipient of the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit, this variety is recognised as being of an exceptional quality
  • Grown on a Quince A rootstock, this tree grows to a maximum height and spread of just four by four metres, making it more than suitable for most average gardens
  • The tree’s stunning snow-white, springtime blossoms will attract plenty of buzzing visitors – in fact, the humble pear tree is certified by the RHS as being one of its Plants for Pollinators. The bee’s knees? We’d say so!
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our mature trees are grown in Air-Pots®, the only type of pot to completely eliminate root circling. A unique design stimulates air pruning for a mass of healthy fibrous roots, which results in a healthy tree that will establish quickly in your garden. With each Air-Pot® made to last up to 20 years, we reuse them on the nursery and wrap your mature tree in hessian for delivery - but if you’d rather keep your tree potted, simply add an Air-Pot® to your basket along with your tree.

What to expect

Supplied as

Air-Pot® Grown Rootballed Tree
This tree is grown in an Air-Pot®, which promotes healthy root growth by air-pruning roots and preventing root spiraling. Before delivery, we will unclip the Air-Pot® and wrap the tree's rootball in hessian so that your tree can be transported safely and we can reuse the pot. You can also purchase the Air-Pot® seperately if you prefer and we will send the tree in the pot in which it was grown.

Pollination group

4
Pollination groups relate to the time of the year when a tree flowers. Trees that flower at the same time can pollinate each other, which helps produce fruit if not self fertile, and can still improve yields even if they are. Trees can usually pollinate a group either side of their own; i.e "2" can Pollinate 1, 2, and 3

How to grow

Good Pest and Disease Resistance

Good Pest and Disease Resistance

Has good resistance to most problems but you should take time to prune to increase air flow. This will prevent the build up of bacterial disease. Keep an eye out for fire blight or Pear scab - these are more rare but require further action.MORE

10 May

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Satisfied customer

Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree

A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.

18 May

Exceptional quality

The quality of the plants was exceptional, unlike ones I have had before from local garden centres. Thank you so much. I will definitely be using you again.
