How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Asparagus is generally trouble free, but can be affected by slugs, snails and asparagus beetles (these can be picked off by hand. It's a good idea to encourage their predators, including birds, ladybirds and ground beetles) Late frosts can also damage young shoots in spring, and plants are prone to rotting in damp soil - this can be avoided by not overwatering.

Water regularly when new

Water new asparagus plants regularly during their first summer. Once established, asparagus plants are drought tolerant, so only need watering in long dry spells.

Full sun

Plant where the asparagus will get 6-8 hours of sunlight daily in spring and summer

Moist, well draining soil

Plant in any moist, well draining soil. Add plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting and avoid any site that gets waterlogged in winter.

Feed in spring

Dig in plenty of well rotted manure or compost when planting. In early spring, apply a high potassium general fertiliser.
