How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Parsnips usually don't suffer from any serious issues with pests or disease. The three issues they may encounter are carrot fly, leaf spot and powdery mildew. The best protection against carrot fly is to cover the plants with a fine, horticultural fleece. Powdery mildew and leaf spot are both fungal infections and can be solved by having adequate circulation between the plants - space them well apart and keep the area around them free of weeds. Also ensuring that the leaves do not become wet by watering at the soil will help prevent infection.

Water often in summer

Water your parsnips well when they are young and regularly in hot or dry conditions.

Full sun

Parsnip plants require 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day. Position in a sheltered space, protected against chilling winds for best growth.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.
