Good pest and disease resistance
Cabbage root fly maggots can eat the roots of turnips. When plants are affected by cabbage root fly, the plants grow slowly, wilt and die as their roots are eaten. You can use cabbage collars to prevent this, and protect your plants by growing them under cover of an insect-proof mesh or horticultural fleece.
Water regularly
At least 2cm of water per week is vital for good root development. Turnips need to grow quickly, and regular water along with a rich soil, will help them do that. Dryer conditions make the roots more pungent, while uniform water makes for the best flavour.
Full sun to partial shade
Turnips need around 6-8 hours of sunlight every day.
Slightly acidic soil
Turnips prefer a slightly acidic soil pH in the range of 6.0 to 6.5. Good soil fertility will help them grow quickly. Make sure the soil is well-draining so the roots don't rot.
