The highlights

  • An attractive small tree with good crops of russet-coloured fruit
  • Harvest in early October
  • Semi dwarf size - suitable even for smaller gardens
  • Make delicious traditional preserves

Description

  • A semi-dwarf variety of medlar which makes a great ornamental tree for any size of garden, also producing a good crop of delicious, russet-coloured fruit
  • Attractive foliage which turns warm shades of golden orange in autumn
  • Medlars need to 'blett' before being eaten - over-ripening to the point of softness. When picked, the fruit should be stored (traditionally it was kept in sawdust in stone jars) until soft
  • Makes a fantastic base for fruit jams and jelly
  • A small tree of great character, mentioned in Shakespeare and beloved since medieval times
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Generally pest and disease free. Watch out for winter moth catrepillars which can affect the foliage and fruit - if seen, pick them off and encourage bird predators by hanging feeders in the branches.

Water in well

Water in well when planting and then regularly during the first few seasons after planting.

Full sun to partial shade

Medlars prefer a warm, sheltered, sunny site but can be grown in partial shade.

Fertile, well-drained soil

Medlars grow best in a deep, fertile, well-drained soil and tolerate most soils, unless they are very chalky or poorly drained.

Feed annually

Apply a general purpose slow-release fertiliser in late autumn or winter ?v=1613300929
