Heuchera Plants

Heucheras are one of those rare plants that look fantastic all year round. They have the most beautiful ruffled foliage in a rainbow of colour choices, topped with tall spires of flowers in spring and summer. Shade tolerant, disease resistant, fully hardy and suitable for borders, pots or even winter hanging baskets - what’s not to love? These really are the most versatile of plants, contrasting perfectly with other perennials or making a stunning display on their own.

Which heuchera?

Which heuchera?

There are so many heuchera colours to choose from that you’re sure to find your favourite. Co-ordinate pinks, purples and reds or vibrant marmalade shades in a border or go all out with a rainbow mix. You’d be amazed at the number of heuchera collectors there are in the UK, but when you get your first, you’ll understand - bet you can’t just plant one.

Planting schemes and partners

Low growing heucheras make an excellent groundcover plant for the front of borders or under trees, setting off taller plants like delphiniums, working as an accent plant or blending effortlessly with other foliage plants like ferns and hostas. They’re also very ornamental on their own, either planted singly in patio pots or in drifts as part of a woodland planting scheme. Beautifully low maintenance and drought tolerant once they’re established, heucheras are a great addition to your resilient plant collection.

Growing tips

Growing tips

Heucheras are good at telling you what they want - the more purple or more red the colour and the darker its shade, the more sun the plant should get; the more yellow-green the colour and the lighter its shade, the more shade the plant should get. Ingenious! Once planted, they’re not fussy about which soil they prefer - anything but heavy clay is fine. From spring through to autumn they like to be watered once or twice a week, but apart from that you can pretty much leave them to do their own thing.

Heuchera FAQs

Where should I plant heuchera?

The best place to plant a heuchera is in well drained soil, in a spot with partial shade. Some varieties can tolerate more sun than others, but they generally grow best with morning sun and afternoon shade, as they’re vulnerable to scorching.

When is the best time to plant heucheras?

You can plant heucheras at any time of year, but spring and autumn are the best times, as this lets the plant get established before any extreme weather in summer or winter.

How do I plant heucheras?

Dig a hole slightly bigger than the plant's root ball and place your heuchera in the centre, at the same depth that it was in the container. Fill the hole in with soil and water your plant thoroughly.

How often should I water heucheras?

Water your heuchera regularly when newly planted, and in hot or dry weather. They like moist soil but not being waterlogged.

Do heuchera plants need fertiliser?

Heuchera plants do just fine without fertiliser, but you can boost their growth in early spring by applying some general purpose plant food.

How do I care for heucheras in winter?

Heucheras are fully hardy and able to face down anything the UK weather can throw at them. You can help them along by putting down a layer of mulch around the base of the plant in autumn, which helps to insulate the roots.

How do I propagate heucheras?

You can propagate a heuchera by dividing it in spring or autumn. Dig up the plant, separate the clumps into smaller pieces (each with roots and shoots), and replant them where you want them.

Can I grow heucheras in containers?

Heucheras are a great choice for containers, with compact growth and big visual impact. Choose a large container with drainage holes at the bottom and plant your heuchera in good quality compost.
