The highlights

  • Strong upright tree
  • Can be pruned to fit average sized gardens
  • White nectar-rich, single flowers
  • Blossoms in April-May

Description

  • Prunus avium or Wild Cherry is a deciduous native flowering tree with clouds of white spring blossom, autumn colour and serious bird appeal
  • Bright green toothed leaves with clusters of flowers emerging from red buds in spring. Bitter red cherries appear in July and will quickly be stripped by grateful birds before the leaves take on their spectacular autumn reds and oranges
  • A fully hardy tree which will reach a height of up to 20m if left to its own devices but can easily be maintained at a smaller size by pruning
  • Grow in a sunny sheltered spot for the best flowers. Prunus avium tolerates all soil conditions
  • A UK native species that's attractive to birds and insects, with great value to pollinators
  • Makes a superb focal point in a lawn, woodland garden or at the back of a border
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

May be affected by silver leaf, bacterial canker and blossom wilt; aphids and caterpillars.

Water in well

Water in thoroughly when planting. For bare root trees, you won't need to water regularly, only in dry spells when needed. You should be able to tell because the leaves will start to wilt and droop. If a container grown tree, it will need more watering until its roots are established. It should be watered every other day or so for the first few months. Then reduce to twice a week until autumn. In the second year it should have an established enough root system to support itself, just water when required as explained above for bare roots. When watering a tree it is important to give a good soaking. It is better to water heavily and less frequently than little and often as this encourages the roots to grow down into the ground.

Full sun

Cherry blossom trees love full sun exposure or a sheltered location, allowing all the nutrients to create blossom in your garden. Choosing a spot away from strong winds will help all the tree's resources to go towards growing and maintaining the blossom.

Any well drained, fertile soil

Adapts to clay, loam and sandy soil, tolerates chalk

Feeding not required

This tree gets all the nutrients it needs from the soil. To give it a boost when newly planted, mix in some compost or well rotted manure and use an organic mulch around the tree to help with moisture retention and keep weeds down.
