Which hellebore?

Which hellebore?

There’s a wide assortment of hellebores out there to choose from. Two of our favourites include Christmas Roses and Snow Roses. Christmas Roses have delightful, bright white flowers and yolk yellow eyes, whilst Snow Roses offer up flowers in pink, purple, white and bicolours. Your hellebore will grow to a height of between 30cm and 60cm, and an eventual spread of up to 1m.

Hellebores are ideal for planting in pots on balconies and terraces, as part of a woodland border or for underplanting deciduous trees and shrubs. Hellebores pair especially well with forsythias (to provide summer shade), ferns and heucheras. They will also attract plenty of pollinators to your garden.

Growing tips

Growing tips

Where you plant your hellebore will depend on the variety in question. Typically, they like a partially shaded spot – e.g. the Christmas Rose. Other hellebores, though, like the Snow Rose, don't mind somewhere slightly sunnier. Hellebores don’t do extremes; they prefer a moist soil that drains well, and dislike soil that’s too dry or too wet. Water well while the plant establishes, and then occasionally thereafter to prevent your hellebore drying out. Feeding wise, apply a leaf mould mulch annually during early springtime or autumn. Apply a compost fertiliser twice yearly, once around February, then again in June.

Hellebore FAQs

Are hellebores the same as Christmas Roses?

Yes, hellebores have a few common names, including Christmas Roses, Snow Roses or Lenten Roses, according to what time of year they bloom.

When is the best time to plant hellebores in the UK?

The best time to plant hellebores is in autumn or early spring. This lets them get established before the winter frosts or the heat of summer, although they can be planted at any time of year as long as they ground isn’t frozen or waterlogged.

Where should I plant hellebores in my garden?

Hellebores grow best in a partially shaded location in the garden - under trees is their natural environment. Make sure they have a well draining soil with plenty of compost or manure mixed in if your garden soil is a bit depleted or dry. Their preferred soil pH is slightly alkaline but they’ll be happy in anything but the most acidic soils.

How often should I water hellebores?

Hellebores need regular watering throughout the growing season so that the soil stays consistently moist. Be careful not to overwater though, as they don’t like waterlogged conditions.

Do hellebores need fertiliser?

Hellebores will do just fine without feeding, but it will give them a boost if you apply a general purpose fertiliser annually in early spring, when fresh growth starts to emerge. Don’t do this in winter or too early in spring though, as the new growth may be damaged by frost.

How do I care for hellebores after they finish flowering?

Once your hellebores have finished flowering, you can trim back the flower stems, which will encourage them to put their energy into new growth rather than producing seeds. Give them a mulch at the same time, to suppress weeds and keep moisture in the ground.

Can I divide hellebores?

Yes, you can make new hellebores and give your existing plant more space by dividing them in early spring or autumn. Just dig up the clump and divide it into smaller pieces, making sure that each section has healthy roots and shoots attached. Replant the new clumps and water them well until they’re established.

When do hellebores bloom in the UK?

Depending on which variety you choose, you can expect your hellebores to bloom between winter and early spring.
