The highlights

  • Plunging purple blooms (up to 30cm long)
  • Ideal for training up a pergola, wall or arch
  • Happy in full sun to partial shade
  • Blooms from May to June

Description

  • The original and best! Cascading waterfalls of lavender purple petals in sweetly-scented flower sprays up to 30cm long, on twining vines that will grow up to 8m (but can be pruned shorter).
  • Flowering freely from May to June, this summer stalwart is famed for its superior fragrance and cottage-garden appeal. After flowering, the plant becomes covered with velvety brown seedpods, which are attractive in their own right.
  • The luscious, shiny green foliage of Wisteria sinensis will cover archways, pergolas, walls and sturdy fences, growing to an ultimate height of six metres or more (though it can easily be pruned shorter). It's traditionally been used on the walls of large houses, lending to its chocolate-box reputation.
  • Even in winter, when the woody vines become bare, the plant retains its rustic charm and architectural appeal, making this a climber with true, year-round interest. Long-lived, vigorous and fully hardy, your wisteria will reliably flower year after year.
  • Wisteria plants require annual pruning to keep them happy, healthy and productive. Check out our guide to wisteria pruning for more information.

Good Pest and Disease Resistance

Wisterias are generally not bothered by pests or disease. Aphids, Scale Insects, Powdery Mildews, and Honey Fungus can affect the plant but the problems are usually not serious.MORE

Full Sun to Partial Shade

Full Sun to Partial Shade

You will want to plant somewhere the plant will receive at least 4-6 hours of sunlight everyday during summer and spring. This variety can handled some partial shade where it receives its light as dappled shade.

Any fertile, well drained soil

Any fertile, well drained soil

If your soil is particularly clay heavy and gets waterlogged often, make sure you mix in plenty of organic matter and perhaps even gravel or perlite to help improve drainage.

Prune Often

Prune Often

Pruning Wisteria is an important task that keeps the plant healthy, promotes flowering, and helps you train in up structures the way you want. In the first few years when you want the Wisteria to grow rapidly up a structure, you will want to prune it more lightly than when it becomes fully mature. Pruning Wisteria occurs in two phases. The first phase begins in late Summer around July/August where you cut back the new whippy growth, unless you are looking to train it to cover your structure in which case this is the time you tie it in. Follow the whippy growth back to the woody stems. Then, cut the whippy growth five buds from this woody stem. This will help you ensure that the plant does not get out of hand and you can control its growth. The second phase begins in late Winter around January/February. Find where you made the cuts in the summer and cut off down a further 2/3 buds. This will promote greater floral growth come early Summer.

Best plants you will ever get online

I have ordered plants from them twice this year. They arrived well packaged, on time and looked strong and healthy. I feel the staff from Roots plants deal with their plants and customers with passion and care. I can’t wait to order again, price is good as well.

Unlike other online sellers, this company are well ahead in the quality stakes. My plant arrived promptly as per their promise and the plant was much more established and healthy than I had expected. It’s the second time I have ordered from them and I have faith in their promise. Excellent service.

A really good quality tree, delivered on time and very well packaged. But the emailed planting advice and supporting information was what really impressed me. Thoroughly recommended.
