Why choose climbing fruit plants?
Climbing plants are great. Fruit plants are great. Combine them? Phwoar, you’re onto something special. There are lots of incredible climbing plants out there that produce delicious fruits to go alongside their ornamental appeal. A garden that manages to be productive as well as visually impactful is a wonderful thing to work towards – after all, why wouldn’t you want to pick your own grapes straight off the vine?

What climbing fruit plants should you choose?
Which climbing fruit plant you want depends firstly on personal preference. There’s no point growing a kiwi plant, for instance, if you’re not particularly into kiwis… Beyond that, it’s worth considering the space available to you, the aspect of your garden – i.e. whether it’s south-facing – and whether you have a greenhouse/conservatory, to name just some of the considerations. If you’re looking for a relatively compact fruiting climber, then the self-fertile ‘Issai’ kiwi is a good choice. If you’re after something a bit bigger and want to cover a sunny wall, for example, then something like ‘Boskoop Glory’ grape is worth thinking about. If you want a touch of the exotic in your garden, then the passion fruit plant (Passiflora edulis) is a must.

Caring for fruiting climbing plants
Fruiting climbing plants should be watered regularly while establishing, and during hot, dry periods throughout the growing season. Mulching around the base of your plant towards the end of winter can help retain moisture and aid with weed suppression. Additionally, an application of fertiliser (high-potassium) at the start of spring can help encourage better fruiting later in the year. If you’re growing your climbing fruit plant in a pot, then it will need more regular watering than if you’re growing it in the open ground.
Happy plants make happy customers

Plants arrived in great condition and very promptly. Well established - much better than the ones I got at my local garden centre.
