The highlights

  • Sweet with a slight spiciness
  • Self fertile (no pollination partner needed)
  • Bake in cobblers and use in fools
  • Harvest from September

Description

  • This damson-esque plum variety is an absolute showstopper, make no mistake!
  • With its stunning white, springtime blossoms and bluish autumn plums, 'Hauszwetsche' is a must-have for anybody of a culinary disposition - the high pectin content of the fruit makes these plums ideal for making jams, as well as for stewing and baking into desserts
  • If you're a fan of tart flavours, then you might also enjoy eating these plums straight from the tree!
  • Perfect for medium-to-large gardens, this tree (grafted onto a St. Julien A rootstock) works beautifully planted at the heart of your lawn or in a spacious bed
  • RHS Plants for Pollinators certified: this plum tree will attract plenty of bees to your garden thanks to its gorgeous blossoms
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

St. Julien A rootstock
Plum varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Spacing:

2m
Plant 2m apart to allow for spreading.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

You may experience issues with aphids and caterpillars, however these can both be washed away using soapy water. Birds will eat the fruits if given the opportunity, so taking steps to prevent this (such as using a fruit net or bird scarer, for example) is recommended. You can reduce the risk of bacterial canker by pruning to improve airflow and by removing any rotting organic matter nearby.

Water well when establishing

Your plum tree will only need routine watering in its first couple of growing seasons to help it establish. Once established, additional watering will typically only be needed in hot, dry spells.

Full sun

Plant your plum tree somewhere it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any well-drained soil

While this plum tree will grow in a range of soils provided drainage is good, fertile, slightly acidic soils are best.

Feed in late winter

Your plum tree will benefit from a feed at the end of winter with a fertiliser that's high in potassium (while container-grown trees appreciate a fortnightly liquid feed throughout the growing season).
