The highlights

  • Sweet and subtly tangy
  • Reliably heavy cropper
  • Makes a roast lamb-worthy jelly
  • Harvest your redcurrants in August

Description

  • We love currants here at Roots, just can't get enough of 'em, and this wonderful redcurrant variety is undoubtedly one of the very best out there!
  • Bearing glossy red berries with great sweetness towards the end of summer, this plant is an ideal option for those who want their garden not only to look good, but to taste good, too
  • Grow in the open ground or, if you're more limited in terms of the space available to you, in a large container on your patio
  • The brightness of this shrub's berries contrasts wonderfully with its rich green deciduous foliage, but this also makes them a target for birds, too! Don't worry, though, some mesh netting or a fruit cage can easily help protect your plant
  • Certified by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) as one of its Plants for Pollinators

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Redcurrant plants like this one are generally very healthy and aren't often impacted by pests or diseases. But they may still experience the odd issue from time to time, including problems with aphids, sawflies, scale insects, mould, mildew and leaf spot.

Water well when establishing

Your redcurrant plant will benefit from regular watering when first planted, just to help it establish nicely. Beyond this, however, extra watering isn't needed, except for in extended hot or dry spells.

Full sun to partial shade

For best fruiting to occur, you should plant your redcurrant shrub in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day). However, you'll still get a semi-decent yield of redcurrants if you plant it in partial shade.

Any moist, well-drained soil

Grows nicely in most soils as long as it retains some moisture. If your soil is particularly dry or poor, then you might want to consider enriching it with some organic matter (something like well-rotted manure works well).

Feed every spring

Like many plants, redcurrants benefit from a feed during spring to keep them nice and happy. A high-potassium fertiliser works best. Those redcurrants grown in pots will require more frequent feeding with a liquid feed throughout the growing season (all-purpose in early spring, then high-potassium in summer).
