Leucanthemum FAQs
When is the best time to plant leucanthemums in the UK?
For the best results, plant your leucanthemums in spring or early autumn, when the soil is moist and warm. Don’t worry if you miss this window - any time of year is fine if the weather is mild and the soil is workable.
Where should I plant leucanthemums in my garden?
Leucanthemum plants do best in full sun or partial shade, with any type of well draining soil.
How often should I water leucanthemum plants?
Water your leucanthemums regularly when they’re newly planted, keeping the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Once established, they are pretty drought-tolerant but will still benefit from watering during dry spells.
Do leucanthemum plants need fertiliser?
Leucanthemums will do fine without fertiliser, but there’s no harm in boosting their growth with a sprinkle of slow release feed in spring. Be careful not to give them too much nitrogen, as this can promote leggy foliage growth at the expense of flowers.
How do I care for leucanthemum plants during the winter?
Leucanthemum plants are hardy in the UK and can deal with some pretty cold temperatures. However, applying a layer of mulch around the base of the plants in late autumn will give them extra protection in case of harsh frosts.
Do leucanthemum plants need pruning?
Deadhead the faded flowers to encourage your plants to bloom continuously throughout the growing season, then in early spring you can cut back the old foliage to encourage new growth and keep the plants tidy.
How do I propagate leucanthemum plants?
After a few years you can propagate new leucanthemum plants by dividing them in early spring or autumn. Just dig up the clumps, divide them into smaller sections with roots and shoots attached, and replant them in other places.
When do leucanthemum plants bloom in the UK?
Leucanthemum plants flower from late spring into summer, and can last well into autumn if you keep up the deadheading!
