The highlights

  • Big, bold sweetness and tartness
  • Oranges with vibrant, ruby-coloured flesh
  • Eat as wedges or use to make sticky marmalade
  • Harvest from December to April

Description

  • Looking to shake up your half-time orange routine with something a bit different? Want a citrus fruit that Dracula himself can't get enough of? Or perhaps you're simply looking to grow your own juicy fruit, rather than rely on supermarket varieties flown in from around the world? This blood orange tree has what you're looking for!
  • The perfect plant for a sunny patio, this orange tree produces fruit with more complex tasting notes than standard oranges, with sweetness and tartness mingling together beautifully in every bite
  • Blood oranges are great for juicing and eating fresh, as well as for freshening up salads, baking in cakes or making a marmalade that Paddington would be proud of
  • It's not just the fruits that are fabulous, the flowers and foliage are too. The white flowers are sumptuously fragrant, whilst the glossy, evergreen foliage provides excellent contrast
  • Container growing is best for citrus trees, as this allows you to position them where they get the sun they need, whilst also meaning you can move them indoors in the cold winter months
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

This tree doesn't tend to be troubled by disease but can be affected by certain pests, including aphids, spider mites and scale insects.

Water throughout the year

Water your orange tree regularly in the spring and summer, especially when it's hot and dry. Your tree will grow best in moist (but not waterlogged) soil. In the winter, continue watering but allow for the top layer of compost/potting mix to partially dry out before watering again, as overwatering is a big cause of stress in citrus trees.

Full sun

Position your orange tree somewhere it will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day, but where it's sheltered from the hottest, most scorching of the sun's rays.

Any well-drained, loam-based soil

Plant your blood orange tree in loamy soil or a fertile potting mix (you can get citrus-specific mixes). Ensure it has good drainage (look for horticultural grit or perlite on the label).

Feed regularly

Orange trees are hungry feeders, so use a citrus-specific fertiliser and apply it per the product label's instructions (this will usually be a once weekly or fortnightly feed).
