The highlights

  • Professionally trained in an espalier shape
  • Includes both cooking and dessert varieties
  • Bite into fresh or incorporate into crumbles
  • Juicy, crisp apples, impressive blossoms

Description

  • Creating an espalier with an apple tree is an excellent way to make use of a sunny wall you’ve got going spare. An espalier-trained tree comprises a vertical central leader from which horizontal arms branch outward, and can lead to greater fruit production and easier harvesting!
  • ‘Braeburn Hillwell’ is a sport (genetic mutation) of ‘Braeburn’, yielding deep red apples with good firmness that store very well
  • ‘Bramley’s Seedling’ is widely regarded as the nation’s favourite cooking apple, producing excellent fruit with a sharp flavour profile that’s ideal for sauces, chutneys, crumbles and pies
  • ‘Cox’s Orange Pippin’ is a variety with real pedigree, having been grown for roughly 200 hundred years – sweet, juicy and complex dessert apples? Yes, please…
  • ‘Discovery’ is an early season dessert apple with notes of strawberry in its flavour profile and an RHS Award of Garden Merit (AGM) to its name
  • ‘Red Ellison’ crops heavily, displays great disease resistance, attracts pollinators and is generally just a bit of a fruiting workhorse!
  • Luckily for you, we’ve got everything you need to know when it comes to planting, training and pruning your espalier apple tree! Check out our article, How to Espalier Apple Trees, for more information

Rootstock:

M26 dwarfing rootstock
Apple trees grafted onto dwarfing rootstocks (like M26) grow to a much shorter height - roughly 3m - making them ideal for smaller gardens, patios, courtyards and balconies. Patio trees can be kept to an even shorter height with appropriate pruning.
M26 dwarfing rootstock
M26 rootstock apple trees typically only reach a maximum height of 3m (and often shorter), making them a great choice for gardens with more limited space.

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Whilst your espalier apple tree will be robust and healthy, all fruit trees can be prone to problems with aphids and caterpillars. These can easily be washed off with soapy water.

Full sun

Espalier apple trees are most productive when planted in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any fertile, well-drained soil

Apple trees tend to grow best in loamy, fertile soil with good drainage. Consider amending your soil with some organic matter if you need to improve fertility or drainage.
