The highlights

  • Decadent, juicy and sweet
  • Perfect for pots
  • Roast with honey or bake in a pie
  • Biferous - harvest in June and August

Description

  • A French fig variety first written about all the way back in the 17th century, 'Goutte d'Or' is a naturally compact and shrubby tree notable for its biferous nature (often providing two harvests per year)
  • Producing deliciously sweet, yellow-green figs at the start of summer and then again at the season's end, this variety is small enough to grow in a large container, making it ideal for patios and balcony gardens
  • Another feature that makes this fig suitable for growing here in the UK is that it tolerates both wet and cold weather (come on, it wouldn't be Britain without a mention of the weather...)
  • Whack your hand-picked figs in a roasting tray, drizzled with some honey, and let the oven do the rest!
  • The tree features gorgeous, deeply lobed and highly recognisable leaves which add more than just a touch of Mediterranean character to any outdoor space

How To Grow

Excellent pest and disease resistance

Rarely troubled by any diseases or pests.

Water regularly

Fig trees like 'Goutte d'Or' benefit from frequent watering, even once they're well-established. It's particularly important that you water your fig tree during hot, dry weather, or if you're growing your fig tree in a container.

Full sun to partial shade

Although this fig will grow well enough in partial shade, best growth and fruiting will occur in full sun (at least 6 hours of sunlight per day).

Any moist, well-drained soil

For the best growth, plant your fig tree in soil with good drainage but that's still somewhat moisture retentive. Preferably, your soil will also be fertile and rich in organic matter.

Feed every spring

Fig trees benefit from a good feed with a high-potassium fertiliser during the springtime, whilst those fig trees grown in containers need a weekly/fortnightly (depending on the manufacturer's instructions) liquid feed throughout the growing season.
