Description

  • The captivating white flowers appear in abundance in mid-spring, and provide an excellent contrast to the young, bronzish foliage, which turns green with age and then reddish in the autumn
  • A tree that makes an excellent focal point for your garden, underplant its wide-spreading canopy with hostas, heucheras and hellebores for maximum impact
  • This tree is a bit of a show off; not only does it look incredible but it offers excellent benefits to wildlife and pollinators - jeez, save some talent for the rest of us, why don't you?!
  • 'Ukon' has been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit (AGM) which demonstrates just how well it performs in British gardens

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Might be targeted by aphids or caterpillars; these can be picked off, with the foliage then sprayed with soapy water. From a disease point of view, this tree can be impacted by diseases like silver leaf, bacterial canker and blossom wilt.

Water when establishing

Established cherry blossoms don't particularly need watering except in dry spells, and typically receive enough water from rainfall alone. Whilst your tree is establishing, however, it will benefit from more frequent watering (a good watering roughly once weekly) for the first year or so, and potentially more frequently than that in the first few weeks after planting.

Full sun

Grow somewhere that your tree will receive at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Any fertile, moist, well-drained soil

Although it prefers fertile, moist, well-drained soil, this cherry will adapt to most soil types (except those prone to waterlogging).

Feeding not required

Cherry blossom trees usually get enough nutrients from the soil without the need for additional fertilisation. That said, an application of organic matter mulch each spring can help the tree as it goes into the growing season.
