The highlights

  • Conical, columnar tree (spreading with age)
  • Large tree – grows up to 10m
  • Distinctive deciduous, fan-shaped leaves
  • Incredible golden autumn colour

Description

  • One of the oldest trees on earth, and often referred to as a “living fossil”, ginkgo trees are as impressive as they are ancient; they’ve been around for more than 200 million years – talk about longevity!
  • The wonderful flabellate (fan-shaped) leaves start out a lime green colour in spring and summer before taking on honeyed, amber shades in the autumn months
  • Ginkgo trees also typically drop their leaves all at once (or at least within a very short timespan) rather than gradually, like other deciduous trees, providing an incredibly impressive display
  • Fully hardy (RHS H6) and easy to grow, these grand, ol’ trees are a great option as a focal point for larger gardens
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

High Pest/Disease resistance

Generally pest and disease resistantMORE

Water regularly when newly planted

Water nearly everyday during the first few months after planting. Once established, rainfall should be adequate, but may need some extra water during dry and hot spells during the first few years

Full Sun

Position in Full Sun (6h+) or partial shade

Moist but well-drained soil

Can grow in almost any well-drained soil, from sandy to clay and from acidic to slightly alkaline

Prune Annually

The best time of year to prune is late Autumn, in winter or in early spring. The tree should be dormant when you trim it so it will have a chance to heal before producing leaves and flowers. Generally, pruning is unnecessary. You may wish to prune while it is still young and establishing its shape. Otherwise, the only necessary pruning is to remove dead branches or weak or broken limbs
