Care Guide

Good Pest and Disease Resistance

Astrantia has good defense against slugs and snails, arguably the most troublesome garden pest. However, they have have issues with the astrantia leaf miner and powdery mildew. Often, problems with leaf miners are not fatal to the plant so control may not be necessary. Regardless, you can remove infested leaves and squash the larvae or mites if you want to get rid of them. To prevent powdery mildew you should try to prevent crowded and humid conditions. Properly space plants apart and get rid of any weeds. Water at the soil and try to prevent soil splashing from the soil onto the leaves. MORE

Full Sun to Partial Shade

Plant somewhere where the plant will receive around 6 hours of direct sunlight every day.

Fertile, Well-Drained Soil

A good mix is three parts quality garden compost to one part top-soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and easily becomes waterlogged, add some perlite into the soil to improve drainage.

Prune Lightly

Prune away flower stems after the bloom has finished and give the plant a little tidy up in spring removing any dead leaves.
