Description

  • The luminous green globes and sprawling stems of Kohl Rabi add real interest to the veg patch. Which I guess is a polite way of saying it looks like a UFO
  • The creamy white flesh has a sweet, mild flavour and can be eaten raw in salads, steamed, stir fried or baked into a gratin with cheese sauce
  • Grow in open ground or raised beds for the best results - these are compact plants which can even be grown in large containers
  • You will receive a strip of eight healthy young plants ready to grow on
  • F1 hybrid plants bred for improved vigour, yields and disease resistance
  • RHS Award of Garden Merit winner
  • Plant out after the first frosts and harvest in 6-8 weeks
  • Premium plants grown by vegetable experts on a family run farm in Lancashire and sent to you at the best possible time for planting
  • Growing your own gives you healthy, fresh produce with a lower carbon plantprint than anything you can buy from a shop
  • Easy to grow and care for - simply remove your plants from their strip and pot them on individually until the last chance of frost has passed and they're ready to plant outside

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Our vegetable plug plants are bred for good pest and disease resistance, but may still be susceptible to common problems. Like all brassicas, kohl rabi can suffer from cabbage root fly, club root, caterpillars or cabbage whitefly. It's a good idea to cover your brassicas with a horticultural fleece to keep off pests and to ensure that your soil is well drained and not too acidic, to prevent club root. If this does occur, (signs include the leaves wilting and turning purple, with swollen/bulbous roots below ground) you should avoid planting brassicas in that bed for the next four years. If you find a plant with club root, rip it up and burn it/dispose in the landfill bin.

Water regularly

When you first plant your kohl rabi plants, give them a good water, then keep the soil consistently moist. Usually until June the UK rain will take care of that, but if there are any dry spells, you should go out and feel the soil. If the soil is dry to the touch, then give the plant some water.

Full sun

Kohl Rabi plants need full sun. Position them where they will get 6-8 hours of direct sunlight every day.

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.

Feed regularly

Kohlrabi is a heavy feeder! Add manure at planting time and feed with a general purpose fertiliser every two weeks until harvest.
