How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Our vegetable plug plants are bred for good pest and disease resistance, but may still be susceptible to common problems. Like all brassicas, spring cabbage can suffer from cabbage root fly, club root, caterpillars or cabbage whitefly. It's a good idea to cover your brassicas with a horticultural fleece to keep off pests and to ensure that your soil is well drained and not too acidic, to prevent club root. If this does occur, (signs include the leaves wilting and turning purple, with swollen/bulbous roots below ground) you should avoid planting brassicas in that bed for the next four years. If you find a plant with club root, rip it up and burn it/dispose in the landfill bin.

Water regularly

When you first plant your cabbages give them a good water, then keep the soil consistently moist. Usually until June the UK rain will take care of that, but if there are any dry spells, you should go out and feel the soil. If the soil is dry to the touch, then give the plant some water.

Full sun

Plant in a sunny spot - can also deal with a little afternoon shade

Any fertile, well-draining soil

Thrives in any well-drained soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and/or often becomes waterlogged then you can improve the drainage by adding in plenty of organic matter such as garden compost as well as some perlite or gravel.

Feed regularly

For the biggest crops, sprinkle some organic fertilizer around the base of the plant, such as worm castings or chicken manure pellets, when planting and once a month after that.
