The highlights

  • Grows in sun, part-shade or full shade
  • Quickly clothes a wall, fence or trellis
  • Foliage turns a brilliant crimson in autumn
  • Can withstand the harshest UK winters

Description

  • Named for its glorious autumnal colour, 'Red Wall' is a variety of Virginia creeper with both style and substance
  • Its penta-lobed leaves start out a rich green colour in spring, covering the vines densely, before turning an rich, punchy red colour in the autumn months
  • A highly vigorous climber, use this plant to dress a drab or dreary vertical surface (walls, fences and garages are particularly popular options for this variety)
  • This climber is a fabulous option for those gardens that haven't been blessed with a lot of Vitamin D - it grows really nicely in even full shade. If you want the very best colour, though, then a partially shaded spot is *chef's kiss*
  • Like most Virginia creepers, 'Red Wall' is as tough as a tank; hardy down to temperatures of -20°C, and tolerant of drought, they don't come much more rugged than this plant
  • It's not just the foliage of this creeper that's attractive, it produces wonderful ornamental blackish blue berries, too!
  • It's recommended that you give your young Virginia creeper some support (like some canes or a small trellis) for the first one or two years. Over time, the plant will develop self-clinging suckers and support will no longer be required
  • Please Note: Our climbers are pruned back each winter, and some during the summer, so you may find at certain times of year they do not cover the whole 90cm cane. This is intentional to ensure the best growth when you plant out

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Generally free of disease. This plant may have issues with Red Spider Mites and Vine Weevils. Inspect the leaves routinely for signs of potential pests, including webs and chunks bitten out of the foliage. If you find Red Spider Mites, then try misting the plant with some water as they tend to thrive in drier conditions. If you find Vine Weevils, try to pick off as many of the adults and the larvae as you can.

Water often in first year

For the first year after you've planted it, you'll want to water 'Red Wall' regularly (a deep watering every week or so) to keep the soil nice and moist, especially during extended dry periods. However, as the plant establishes itself, its watering needs will decrease to the point that watering will only be needed during drought conditions.

Full sun to full shade

This variety can grow well in every light condition, from a sunny spot to a fully shaded position.

Any moist, well-drained soil

This variety of Virginia creeper will grow well in most soils provided it's relatively moist and drains well. Improve drainage by working some compost into your soil (or, if drainage is seriously poor, consider incorporating some perlite).

No feeding required

No routine feeding is usually needed (you can, however, apply a thin layer of all-purpose fertiliser around the plant's roots during the spring if you think your soil needs enriching).
