Which mature tree should I choose?

Which mature tree should I choose?

We’ve got a whole range of mature trees, so don’t worry if you’re unsure which to go for – we can help. We’ll break it down for you. Do you want an ornamental or fruiting tree? For ornamental trees, you can opt for something like a showy cherry blossom, a graceful acer or a tactile silver birch. In terms of fruit trees, you can go for a heritage favourite like the ‘Conference’ pear or the ‘Victoria’ plum, or something a bit different, like the ‘Jelly King’ crabapple (whose fruits make an amazing jelly if you can get to them before the birds!)

  Why buy a mature tree?

Why buy a mature tree?

Undoubtedly, one of the main benefits of purchasing a mature tree is that it adds instantaneous impact to your garden; unlike a one or two-year-old tree, which will take some years to grow to its ultimate height, mature trees will arrive with a hefty headstart. No waiting around required. Because of their already-developed root network, mature trees also have a greater chance of successfully establishing in your garden when planted.

  Caring for mature trees

Caring for mature trees

Mature trees come with a hefty rootball, meaning they’ll initially need a lot of regular watering throughout the first growing season (or two) to help them establish as well as possible. This watering is particularly important during hot, dry spells. Many of our mature trees have been grown using innovative Air-Pots® which help eliminate root spiralling and lead to quicker establishment after planting. To keep your tree secure, use one of our planting kits, which features wooden stakes, a plant tie and some Rootgrow you can sprinkle in the planting hole before you put the tree in.

Mature Trees FAQs

What are mature trees?

Unlike most trees, which are purchased as saplings or young ‘whip’ trees, our range of mature trees are older (four or five years old), considerably larger, have a much-better-established root network and, in the case of fruiting trees, will bear fruit far quicker.

How do you plant mature trees?

Mature trees are planted in a similar way to younger trees. The main difference is that it will need more support than a smaller tree. Using stakes and supersoft tree ties, you can help stabilise your tree. Check out our video from grower Danielle to see how it’s done.

How do you care for a mature tree?

Water your mature tree regularly for at least the first couple of growing seasons while it establishes. Once established, your tree will likely only need watering during hot, dry spells (check the tree’s individual product page for more specific information). Apply slow-release fertiliser at the start of spring and mulch to help retain moisture and suppress competition.

Is it possible to buy fully-grown trees?

Yes, it is possible to buy fully-grown trees. While our mature trees aren’t fully grown, they’re still considerably larger than younger saplings, offering your garden more instantaneous impact as a result.
