The highlights

  • Shimmering white peeling bark
  • Fresh green foliage with yellow catkins in spring
  • Plant as a feature in a large lawn or in groups
  • Attracts birds, bees and butterflies to your garden

Description

  • The Himalayan Birch Tree will bring winter wonder to your garden with its snowy white, exfoliating bark. Every year a layer of the shimmering bark peels off to reveal a fresh layer underneath
  • Fresh, yellow-green foliage with male (yellow) and female (green) catkins appearing in June to attract pollinators to your garden
  • The female catkins are followed by cone like fruits with winged seeds which are carried on the wind and can travel for hundreds of miles!
  • Colour all year round: in autumn the foliage turns to a striking golden yellow before it falls, leaving the elegant architectural white branches to form the backbone of your winter garden
  • A large, fast growing deciduous tree which can grow up to 18m depending on conditions
  • Slender Himalayan Birch makes an ideal feature tree in a lawn and also works well planted in small clusters of three or more (plant 1-2m apart)
  • The bark of Himalayan Birch was traditionally used for writing Sanskrit texts and scriptures, especially in Kashmir, and is still used for scared mantras
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single-use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post.MORE
  • Our trees are usually between 18 and 36 months old at the time of dispatch.
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better-shaped tree. This can stop the tree from becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth.MORE

How To Grow

High Pest/Disease resistance

Generally pest and disease resistantMORE

Position in full sun to partial shade

This tree is adaptable and generally tolerant of exposed and windy sites, dry or wet conditions and even waterlogging

Grow in well drained soil

Himalayan Birch will grow in low to moderately fertile soil that is moist but well drained

Prune Annually

Any pruning should be done when the tree is fully dormant, from late summer until early winter. If you prune in late winter or early spring when the sap is 'rising' this can cause heaving bleeding of sap and weaken or even kill the tree
