The highlights

  • A combination of sweet and sour
  • Perfect for patio growing
  • Eat fresh, use in drinks or make a marmalade
  • Harvest from July to November

Description

  • Fancy growing your very own citrus fruit? Want something a bit different than your bog-standard orange or lemon? This calamondin has you covered!
  • With pretty, scented white flowers and deep green, ovate foliage, it'd be easy to forget about this tree's fruit - but not when it's this good!
  • From summer into autumn, calamondin trees produce delectable, round, orange fruits just a few centimetres in diameter; these have a tangy kick with additional notes of sweetness also creeping onto the palate
  • Although it can be grown in the ground, this tree is perhaps best suited to growing in a large container. This way, it can be moved inside or to a more suitable location as the weather cools
  • A worthy recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit, this tree has been recognised as performing well in British gardens
  • Our potted trees are supplied in EcoPots™. Eco pots use 70% less plastic and are fully recyclable, unlike normal single use pots. They flex and so produce less root spiralling and travel better in the post
  • Our trees are professionally pruned before dispatching. This formative pruning can involve cutting the main leader, if the expert tree growers decide this will produce a better shaped tree. This can stop the tree becoming "leggy", and promote stronger, bushier growth

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

This tree isn't usually troubled by disease but can be affected by certain pests, including aphids, spider mites and scale insects.

Water throughout the year

Keep your tree watered throughout the year. A good gauge of how long to leave between waterings is to allow the top 10cm of soil or compost to partially dry out before you water again. This is particularly important in autumn and winter, as overwatering can stress your tree. In spring and summer, you can water more liberally. Originating in highly humid regions, this tree will thank you if you regularly mist its leaves.

Full sun to partial shade

Preferably, plant your calamondin tree somewhere it will receive at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. It can also tolerate a bit of shade too, however.

Any well-drained, loam-based soil

This tree does best in loamy soil that drains freely. If you have poor soil, consider amending with some organic matter or perlite like to improve drainage. As this tree will likely be grown in a container, consider looking for a citrus-specific potting mix.

Feed regularly

Like most citrus trees, calamondins require regular feeding throughout the year. You can use a fertiliser specifically formulated for citrus plants, following the instructions on the label.
