Description

  • Nothing beats a fresh, juicy plum, and the truth is that you don’t need acres of outdoor space to grow your own! Our patio plum trees can be kept to just 1.5m in height, making them perfect for balconies, courtyards and, of course, patios
  • ‘Victoria’ is the classic plum variety, loved nationwide for its plump, sweet fruit and the ease with which it grows!
  • ‘Jubilee’ is the challenger to the ‘Victoria’ throne, thanks to its hardiness, disease resistance and large fruit size – its plums are perfect for both scoffing fresh and cooking with
  • ‘Opal’ reliably yields heavy crops of highly aromatic, rich plums (ideal for jam-making) early in the season
  • ‘Old Greengage’ produces gages (a type of plum that’s smaller than European varieties) in August with exceptional honeyed taste, great aroma and melt in your mouth texture – the dream!
  • Our growers ensure your patio tree has a strong, developed root system and thick main stem before being sent to you. It's been grown on a dwarfing rootstock and pruned to a compact size during its time at the nursery. Plant your tree in a small pot to help stunt growth and prune yearly to help keep the desired shape and size

Rootstock:

St. Julien A rootstock
Plum varieties are usually grown by grafting them to rootstocks. This has benefits for pest resistance, genetics and the efficiency of propagation. Importantly, it also limits the height of a tree to a more manageable, specific height. SJA plum trees tend to only reach 4m tall, perfect for smaller spaces or those afraid of stepladders. They can also be trained to a smaller size by pruning or restricting the roots, by keeping in a smaller pot

How To Grow

Good pest and disease resistance

Our patio plum trees typically display good resistance to problems like cracking, but might still be impacted by aphids and caterpillars (though these can easily be washed away with soapy water).

Water regularly

Patio plum trees require more regular watering than those grown in the ground. In spring and summer, and particularly in hot, dry weather, daily watering might be needed.

Full sun

Patio plum trees typically grow and fruit best in full sun (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day).

Any moist, well-drained compost

Plant your patio plum tree in loamy compost like John Innes No.3.

Feed every spring

Fruit trees grown in containers benefit from an application of general-purpose, granular fertiliser every spring just to give them a helping hand.
