Care Guide

Good pest and disease resistance

Astrantia has good defence against slugs and snails, arguably the most troublesome garden pest. However, they can have issues with the astrantia leaf miner and powdery mildew. Often, problems with leaf miners are not fatal to the plant so control may not be necessary. Regardless, you can remove infested leaves and squash the larvae or mites. To prevent powdery mildew you should try to prevent crowded and humid conditions. Properly space plants apart and get rid of any weeds. Water at the soil and try to prevent soil splashing from the soil onto the leaves. MORE

Water often in Summer

Water well to keep the ground consistently moist. During hot, dry periods, this could require watering every few days or possibly even every day. This is especially true during the plants first few years before it has had the chance to establish extensive roots.MORE

Partial Shade/Full Sun

Astrantia can grow in full sun but will actually prefer some dappled shade where it receives some partial sunlight for around 4-6 hours a day during summer.MORE

Fertile, well-drained soil

A good mix is three parts quality garden compost to one part top-soil. If your soil is particularly clay-heavy and easily becomes waterlogged, add some perlite into the soil to improve drainage.MORE
